Who is Lyla Miklos?

 

A resident of Hamilton since 1982 and a resident of Hamilton West since 1999, Lyla is a 28 year-old bisexual woman, community activist, national television programmer, local radio broadcaster and community theatre performer and volunteer.

Lyla is a multiple award-winning graduate of Mohawk College’s Radio Broadcasting (1997) and Broadcast Journalism (1998) programs and was a past Director on the College’s Alumni Board (Lyla now sits on the Board's Marketing and Communications Committee). Currently, Lyla works for CHUM Television as the Programming Coordinator for Bravo!, Space: The Imagination Station and Drive-In Classics. Lyla has been working in broadcasting for more than six years having gained some of her many media work experiences with: Vision TV, Y95, CHML, CFRB, CFMU, C101.5 FM and The Satellite just to name a few. Lyla is also the host and producer of Centre Stage  (a celebration of musicals from both the stage and screen) and Theatre Bites (two minute mini-theatre reviews) on C101.5 FM Mohawk College Radio. Lyla is a past member of CSIRP (Canadian Society for Independent Radio Production).

Lyla has been involved for over a decade with Hamilton’s local theatre arts scene having volunteered her talents both in front of and behind the footlights with Hamilton Theatre Inc., Theatre Aquarius, The Player’s Guild of Hamilton, Drury Lane Theatricals, Theatre Ancaster, Stoney Creek Little Theatre, The Peninsula Players and Words, Words, Words.  A past Board Member for Hamilton Theatre Inc, currently she is the theatre company’s publicist. An accomplished vocalist for several years, Lyla has sung everything from O Canada at Ti-Cat games to backup vocals on the latest Scott Cameron Smith CD.

Lyla has been a Queer activist in the Hamilton area for nearly a decade. Lyla helped to create Mohawk College’s first official support and social club for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgendered (GLBT) students – Mohawk Pride. For the past five years Lyla has sat on the organizing committee of Hamilton Pride, culminating with her chairing the committee in 2002. Lyla now sits on the GLBT Committee for the City of Hamilton and is an active member of The Toronto Bisexual Network and Bisexual Women of Toronto. For the past three years Lyla has been a friend of The First Unitarian Church of Hamilton, a religious organization with a long and proud tradition of supporting the GLBT community of Hamilton.  Lyla is also a member of OPIRG (Ontario Public Interest Research Group), an organization who proactively works on human rights, social justice and environmental causes locally and globally.  Lyla has now joined SCHI (Strengthening Hamilton's Community Initiative) a community based, capacity building project developed in response to the crisis of September 11, 2001. SCHI's vision is to build a vibrant and harmonious community that values our racial, religious and cultural diversity - a community in which people are enabled to become active participants and contributors.

Lyla has been involved in Southern Ontario’s science fiction fandom community for over a decade, lending her support and talents to several fan clubs and conventions including: Torcon 3 (2003 Worldcon), Toronto Trek, Ad Astra, Filk Ontario, Odyssey Trek and The USS Voyager just to name a few.

Lyla’s writings have been published in or broadcast on: The Hamilton Spectator, View Weekly, The Satellite, In Touch, Wavelength, The Pride Pages (Kitchener-Waterloo), The National Post, CBC Radio, C101.5 FM, CHMR, CHML, spacecast.com, QueerTelevison, TV Guide and Ain’t It Cool News just to name a few.

Warrender Award (1998), Ontario Student Opportunity Trust Fund Award (1998), Radiocorp Awards (1997 & 1998), Mohawk College Alumni Association Award (1997), Best Performance in a Cabaret - HTI (1994), Ontario Scholar (1993), Hill Park Drama Award (1993), OAC Art Award (1994), Hill Park Proficiency Awards (1989, 1990 & 1993), Laura Miller Public Speaking Awards (1991, 1992 & 1993), Sports Team Manager of The Year - Hill Park, Bronze Medal - Ladies Shot Put and Kidz Quiz Finalist.
