Lyla's
take on the Issues: |
| Homelessness and Poverty | |||
“I
want to know how it is possible for us to live in one of the richest
provinces in our country and in one of the most prosperous countries on
this planet and yet have homeless people freezing on the streets and
families having to choose between paying the utility bills or feeding
their children?”
| Social Services | |||
“I
want to know how a provincial government that has the audacity to give
themselves a 25% pay increase is able to look at themselves in the mirror
while they cut social services across the board?”
| GLBT Issues | |||
“I
want to know how a government that is eagerly willing to collect tax
dollars from the GLBT community is unable, or unwilling, to legalize their
marriages? I also want antiquated sex laws that regulate and control the
sexual activities of consenting adults abolished.”
| Healthcare | |||
“I
want to be able to go to a hospital emergency room and know that I will
not be sent away because there is not enough staff or beds available.”
| Education | |||
“I
want public school teachers to be treated with respect and appreciated for
the impressionable and important significance they have on the youth of
our province. Right now our teachers are overworked and underpaid and are
expected to be working on behalf of our children 7 days a week 24 hours a
day with a curriculum that was slammed through without any heartfelt
thought to the implications of that change on staff, children, parents or
community.” “I want to know how students who pursue a college or university education are supposed to support themselves when the cost of tuition keeps going up exponentially every year while minimum wage has been frozen at $6.85 for years? In addition students who work full-time at minimum wage over the summer are penalized by the government and are often not eligible for students loans.”
| Hydro | |||
“I’m
disgusted by a government that would allow family and business owner’s
Hydro bills to triple or even quadruple and then attempt to band aid the
problem by spending billions of dollars on sending vote bribe cheques to
consumers rather than use our tax dollars to fix the electricity system
and make it work more efficiently and affordably.”
| Human Rights and Civil Liberties | |||
| “The fear mongering and war chants from the right have no place in a democratic society that is supposed to judge people “by the content of their character” not the colour of their skin. The insidious racism and attacks on our civil liberties that are being sanctioned by our governments are a frightening eye opener for anyone who holds dear the freedoms of thought, expression, assembly, association and religion - freedoms our forbearers fought for and would be ashamed seeming them erode.” | |||
