Lyla Miklos is an award winning
broadcaster, publicist, activist, community organizer, writer, vocalist,
public speaker, and actress. Born and raised in Frobisher Bay, Baffin
Island, North West Territories, Lyla has called Hamilton, Ontario home
since 1982.
A graduate of Mohawk College's Media
Studies program, Lyla has been working in the media and communications
industry for over a decade. She is the Host and Producer of Centre Stage
on INDI 101 and is the owner of Lyla-The Publicist, a business which
provides media relations and special events planning services.. Her
wealth of broadcasting experience includes past roles with Showcase
ACTION, Showcase DIVA, SPACE, Bravo, Drive-In Classics, Vision TV, The
Aboriginal Peoples Television Network, Y95, CHML and Cable 14.
Lyla's theatrical talents have been
showcased in front of and behind the footlights with Hamilton Theatre
Inc., Theatre Aquarius, The Players' Guild of Hamilton, Drury Lane
Theatricals, Theatre Ancaster, Stoney Creek Little Theatre, The
Peninsula Players, Piccadilly Circus, HammerTheatre and Daycar
Productions. An accomplished vocalist, Lyla has belted out O Canada at
sporting events, recorded in studio with local area musicians, performed
numerous musical theatre roles, added her voice to several choirs and
showcased her unique vocal talents as a soloist in countless venues
throughout Southern Ontario.
For over a decade, Lyla has
self-identified as a sex positive feminist queer activist. She helped
create and served as President of Mohawk Pride, Mohawk College's first
official club for LGBTQ students, and was instrumental in forming the
LGBTQ Advisory Committee for the City of Hamilton, later sitting on it
as a member and Interim Chair. Lyla was a part of the organizing
committee of Hamilton Pride Festival Inc. for over a decade, chairing it
in 2005 and 2002. She also was a support group facilitator for the
Toronto Bisexual Network, Bisexual Women of Toronto and the Hamilton
Bisexual Network and a volunteer with the Toronto Women's Bathhouse
Committee.
Lyla has volunteered her time as a board
or committee member with The First Unitarian Church of Hamilton, The
Status of Women Advisory Committee for The City of Hamilton, Elect More
Women, Arts Hamilton's Theatre Arts Committee, Hamilton Theatre Inc.,
Strengthening Hamilton's Community Initiative, The Hamilton West
Provincial NDP Riding Association, The Hamilton Centre Federal NDP
Riding Association, The Communications Energy and Paperworkers Union of
Canada - Local 723 M, The CHUM Locals Council, The Mohawk College Alumni
Association, and The Mohawk Students' Association.
Lyla has been actively involved for over
two decades in Southern Ontario's science fiction fandom community,
supporting several fan clubs and conventions including: Polaris, Toronto
Trek, Ad Astra, Filk Ontario, Gaylaxicon, Worldcon, Odyssey Trek, The
USS Venture and Fan Expo.
